GEO CULTURE: TYPES OF HARDWOOD WE STOCK, SELL AND DELIVER

What is hardwood?

You can recognise a hardwood tree by studying its leaves. Hardwood trees are known for broad, flat leaves. Hardwood produces hotter coals with more longevity, when compared to other wood types. In short, hardwood is a better firewood due to its longer and hotter burn time and producing less smoke.

Namibian Hardwood

Sustainability in the firewood industry is a hot topic (no pun intended). We source our Namibian hardwood range sustainably from reputable suppliers in Namibia.

We stock the following Namibian hardwood varieties

Kameeldoring

Kameeldoring has the lowest moisture content of any well-known braai wood as it’s baked by the African sun to between 0 to 1 % moisture content. This wood is extremely dry and heavy which is why it takes so long to burn and at such a high temperature.

Other awesome facts include that it creates almost no smoke, has a natural musky fragrance, creates a large number of hot burning coals and wastes no energy burning off the moisture.

Sekelbos

The natural oils which are unique to Sekelbos are known to enhance the flavours of braai meat. Unlike Kameeldoring, Sekelbos is yellow in colour and has bark. A great dense and dry hardwood for braais and potjies. It is also easy to stack.

Doring Mix

Doring Mix is a Namibian Hardwood mix consisting of Sekelbos, Mopane, Swarthaak, and Kameeldoring, all packaged in a single bag using various sizes of loose pieces. It is one of the best woods you can braai with or use in your open-fire place. It flames well and leaves amazing coals.

Other Hardwoods

Bluegum

Bluegum is an invasive alien species, native to Australia. It is a very thirsty species, depriving surrounding vegetation of necessary water and minerals. Cutting it down is considered good for the environment, making it an eco-friendly firewood.

This is a dense wood and does not burn for as long as the other hardwoods, although it is known to burn very hotly. A slightly damp bluegum would work great if you are aiming for the longevity of the fire over the heat factor.

Rooikrans

Rooikrans (also known as Rooipitjie) is a tree originally from Australia brought to Cape Town as an ornamental tree in the 1800s and later used for dune stabilisation on the Cape Flats.

Very popular in the Western Cape, Rooikrans usually come in log shapes and are also a great hardwood for a braai. It’s a high-density, fragrant wood type with fairly slow-burning coals.

Blackwattle

As Blackwattle is an alien invasive tree it is encouraged to be used and cut down, making it another eco-friendly firewood option. Thick pieces of wattle are great for hotter and longer fires.

Blackwattle is also excellent wood for pizza ovens, potjies and fireplaces. This wood ignites fairly easily.

Kaggel (Fireplace) Mix

Kaggel Mix is the perfect hardwood for your home fireplace. This bag contains a mixture of Bluegum and Black Wattle that is mixed for your convenience.
